Why Do You Simply Like Dolls and Bears?

Fancy Dolls and Bears: Every girl's dream toys

There is so much information about dolls and bears readily available online and in books these days.  I thought with this post, I'd go someplace a little different.  But before that, if you do want some good background information on this topic, I've linked to some great articles in Wikipedia when you click on DOLL or BEAR.  Both of dolls and bears are really excellent resources with pictures at Wikimedia (scroll to the bottom of the page on the right).

Why do girls love Dolls and Bears?

Okay, with that out of the way I can get down to the purpose of this post.  Lately, I've been asking females I know of all ages just one rather assumptive question:  Why do you like dolls and bears? I say assumptive because I'm assuming that they do when I ask the question.  I was pretty much correct with my take on this as only a few said they didn't really get into dolls when they were younger.  Since I'd never really broached this topic before, I had no idea what I might hear in response to this simple question.  Here's what they said:

  • "Women are nurturing by nature.  Dolls allowed me to fulfill that role even as a little girl."
  • "We girls are so relational.  Dolls provided me a reliable friend, my own special friend."
  • "I knew my baby doll was always going to be there for me!"
  • "It was fun.  I could dress them up and take them with me wherever I went."
  • "They were somebody I could hang out with."
  • "I loved making clothes for them."
  • "Dolls gave me the opportunity to be creative, to live in a world of my imagination."
  • "The brought me comfort."
  • "They were always there for me."
  • "My dolls were beautiful!  I loved this about them."
  • "I can talk with them and they always understand."
  • "They make me happy."

Dolls and Bears are not just for LITTLE girls

No matter the age, that about runs the gamut of what I heard.  Clearly, with a twinkle appearing in their eyes, just the mention of the topic brought joy and happiness...or at least fond memories to most all these ladies that I inquired of.

cutest teddy bear Teddy bears, when injected into the conversation, brought a bit of a different response.  I didn't hear the dressing up, creativity thing at all.  Rather, it was all about cute and cuddly.  Warding off fears.  Comfort and calming.  Something familiar and touchable.

I have to say that I'd never have imagined it, but a recent British newspaper article claims a Third of adults 'still take teddy bear to bed.' Click on that link and read a fascinating article about the latest in teddy bear research by a well-known motel chain.

Does any of this surprise YOU?  Why do you like your dolls?

Do you/did you have a teddy bear?  Are you part of the 1/3 statistic that still sleeps with their Dolls and Bears?
