What happened to my new calligraphy nibs?

Okay, I got new speedball sketching calligraphy pens, and all of the notes I've read about them say to boil them in water first. I did so, but now they're turning odd colors ass if burnt! What do I do?
They sort of have near rust looking stains on them?
The ink is not staying on! It doesn't even fill reservoir!

The boiling water is to remove a lacquer on the nib which protects them from corrosion, if yours were lacquered it sounds as though it isn’t all removed – which could account for the ink “not staying on”.

If they do not work, try passing the nib briefly through a flame or washing them with a dab of washing up liquid on a cotton bud – rinse carefully and dry.

The nibs might get duller as a result of this treatment.
