Ball Boots

Football boots – a brief history
Football has been around for centuries and centuries. The notion of playing with a ball using feet has been thought of all over the world – from ancient Greeks to Chinese dynasties and from Eskimos in Greenland to Maoris in New Zealand. Modern football – with the codes and rules that we are all familiar with, was conceived in 1800s in Europe.
Back then in England and the rest of Europe, football boots were worn to protect feet while playing, and were usually heavy leather work boots, which were fitted with studs or cleats to improve grip and stability. These were ankle length and were mostly used as protection. Soon after, players of the same team would begin to wear the same types of football boots – in an effort to look and feel loyal. This led to the mass production of football boots, and the emergence of many footwear companies, some of which are still around now.
Following the Second World War, the European footwear specialists and football players were astonished to find out that South American players were highly skilled and moved extremely fast on the field. This was due to the fact that their football boots were much lighter and flexible. Intrigued by this, companies began to produce new football boots which were much lightweight and flexible to wear.
Perhaps the most famous football boot competition is between Adidas and Puma – owned by rival brothers who once worked together. Driven by their fierce competition, the two brothers kept on producing new football boots to continuously outdo each other. Puma claimed to have invented interchangeable screws made of plastic and rubber on football boots, something that Adidas also claims. Football boots were now being made of a mixture of synthetic components and leather, making the boots much lighter.
With technological advancements, there has been a massive change in the pattern of boots. This helped make boots that were more comfortable to wear. Football was now a household name because of star players like Pele, and many people wanted to buy football boots just like his. This started off sponsorship – which triggered changes in style, model and colour of boots to suit different players.
In the 1990s, the Predator football boot was formulated, which helped increase traction among boot and ball and boot and ground. This meant that boots could be used on better surfaces, ultimately improving performance. Traditional studs were replaced with a bladed design giving additional stability. Nowadays, there are hundreds of types of football boots out there, created for protection, comfort, stability, traction, performance and of course attraction!
