All About Miss Alaska

The Miss Alaska beauty pageant was not even a household term until the last presidential elections when Sarah Palin decided she wanted to become the first vice president of the United States.

When asked by the media, Sarah Palin describes herself as a hockey mom. But back then she was also captain of a basketball team, a member of the city council, served as Wasilla's mayor, and then first female governor of Alaska. Somewhere between all that she managed to score third place at the Miss Alaska beauty pageant. Who would've thought beauty pageants now produce effective leaders of the most powerful country in the world?

Miss Alaska is an annual beauty competition, a scholarship pageant, that selects representatives for the Miss America in that same year. The Miss Alaska pageant has much the same with how beauty pageants work in other states. The first Miss Alaska was Marguerite Lee in 1937.

Miss Alaska winners are known to make a name for themselves even after the contest. Maybe it's become something of a trend. PJ Gentry and Cindy Suryan, Miss Alaskas 1978 and 1975, became popular radio and TV personalities. Kathy Sharp found work as an NWA (National Weather Association) TV broadcaster during the 1980s. She won Miss Alaska in 1976.

Even the runner ups seem to find a niche for themselves following the Miss Alaska pageant. Alice Welling became a comedic actress and singer. Sarah Palin, we all know how that turned out.

What's in store for Miss Alaska after the pageant? It turns out there is much in store for the crowned winner: she gets to represent Alaska at the Miss America beauty pageant. Miss America is perhaps the most prestigious national beauty pageant in the United States. Seriously if that doesn't qualify as worth the trouble of winning Miss Alaska, we don't know what will.

In the National American Miss beauty pageants do the judges enjoy the slower songs or the faster ones?

I have seen both do well. I think the key is to know your routine well, so that you can perform it with confidence and style. Might be better to do that song that you know well and love to sing at any time, rather than the toughest one you just learned.

Also, use the stage. I have seen a lot of girls stand in one place. They miss out. But you do not want to just pace back and forth. Move forward in a point of the song that fits with some movement.

Show talent and natural personality and you will always to best.
