what causes a plastic doll to turn black over time?

Hey I'm asking this for my sister. She has a white baby doll, that she's had for like 10 years and I think the doll was made in the 80's. And it's turning black..it has black blotchy cheeks, knees, and fingers. Is there anything she can do to slow the color change or get the doll's color back?

you can not repaint plastic its dyed when its molded and the color run through the vinyl, early plastics from the late 1940's you can since they were a hard plastic and they had not learned how to color the plastic at that time.

I am afraid the doll has moisture on the inside and you have a case of black or a type of mold growing inside the body and on the outside. A repair person may be able to get this bleached out some with Volume 40 but they will have to take the doll totally apart and work on it. It may not be worth the value of the doll. You should start with cleaning the outside of the body with 409 on a cloth to see if it will come off. hand often are dirty and residue stays on the surface and begins to mold or the bacteria move in and set up house.
