As for crib bumpers, I'm really, really scared about those. Which ones should I use?

I didn't put anything in my son's crib except him. Everything else is a suffocation hazard ..

I just started letting him use a (small) blanket when he was able to roll over on his own.

I don't think you're an idiot for not knowing, I didn't know either. To be honest, I used a crib bumper for my son until he was 7 months old, then he started using it for leverage to try and JUMP out. I immediately took it out. Then I realized that the bumper was a bad idea in the first place. I should never have put one in there to begin with. Not only is the bumper itself a suffocation hazard, but the strings on the bumper are a choking hazard (if taken apart) and could possibly get wrapped around the baby's neck if long enough. Thinking back, it was a bad idea that I had that bumper in his crib as long as I did. My son is 20 months now and I'm still hesitant about giving him a pillow because he likes to take things apart, I'm afraid he'll take a pillow apart while I'm sleeping in the other room.

Don't feel bad about being 'clueless', we were ALL 'clueless' in the beginning .. and heck, there are still SEVERAL things I'm still 'clueless' about. Motherhood is something that you learn as you go =]
