Take a trip back in time with a disco party

Let the music take hold of you as you ride the soul train to funkytown! Bright lights, bell bottom pants, platform shoes and a mirrored ball can only mean one thing - disco! That's right, for your next big shindig, roll the clock back to the 1970s and boogie down with your friends in your very own discotheque.

The disco era may catch some flack, but when you consider how much of an influence the decade has had on pop culture you can't help but want to recreate the glory days of Studio 54 and dance like John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever.

There are so many options available to those who are inspired by disco and want to throw the perfect disco party. Of course, one should begin by creating the perfect guest list so that you know exactly how many party invitations you will need. Everyone loves a good disco party, and to really get them in the partying mood, try mailing festive invites decorated with disco balls and a light up dance floor. If your budget allows, why not invest in custom designed party invitations that really give off a disco vibe. Bright colors and metallics are perfect accents to any disco invite.

Once you've sent out your invitations you should then concentrate on creating the perfect discotheque atmosphere. Of course, you can't have a disco party without a mirrored ball, so that should be the very first thing you pick up as your prepare to convert your home into a modern day Studio 54. Try placing velvet ropes outside your home to make it appear as if your partygoers will be entering an exclusive club for an evening of dancing and fun. Hang metallic beaded curtains over your windows and doorways so that when light hits them they create shimmering awesomeness. Clear a section of your home and turn it into the dance floor, as this will the main attraction for many of your guests. If you have some money left over, rent a small fog machine to lend a dramatic flair to the dancing area. Create the perfect disco playlist on your iPod or have a DJ play the hits from Gloria Gaynor, Chic, The Village People, Rick James, Donna Summer and KC & The Sunshine Band.

One other detail you should pay attention to is your glassware. Your guests will be partying hard, so you'll want to keep them refreshed, and what better way to serve up some beverages than in light up LED glassware? The flashing lights from their cups will make it seem like they're sitting in the VIP section of Studio 54 with Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger and Cher.

Disco was, and is, all about having fun and celebrating with friends, so be sure to just enjoy planning the party and remember to do the hustle and dance until the early morning.

Is Buttoned Down Disco for young'uns?

Can anyone who's been to London electro/pop/indie night Buttoned Down Disco tell me the average age of the clientele?

I intend to celebrate my birthday there with a friendship group averaging the age of 25 but I've heard we may feel incongruous among the "young(er) crowd".

Buttoned down disco was a fun night cos its a mix of music- but it was quite young one time i went and the venue does play a huge part( i.e 93 feet east sucks)

if there's a big group its a good laugh- as no one takes anything seriously in there- but can be poor sometimes cos it's a bit like a school disco with good music.

I'm letting you know in all honesty it could go either way.
