Barbie: Dolls of the World Collection - Something for Everyone

Barbie continues to be wildly popular among little girls and grown up collectors alike. One reason is her wide range of incarnations. In her 50 plus years, Barbie has appeared in hundreds of professions, fun activities, and exciting costumes.

The Dolls of the World collection goes world wide, giving us some 55 dolls representing peoples from all over the world. Many collectors choose to acquire at least one of these dolls to honor their own ancestral heritage.

I will offer a quick overview here. A complete description of all the entries in this collection would be beyond the scope of this article, but you can view pictures of many of them at www.barbieoftheworld.com.

The Dolls of the World collection includes four dolls in the Landmark Series featuring some of the world's top tourist destinations: Big Ben in London, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor. Added to the Landmark Series in 2011 was the Sydney Opera House.  All of these dolls are dressed in gowns inspired by the landmarks they represent.

There are five dolls in the Dolls of the World Asia Series, including three Japanese Barbies and one Ken as a Japanese Samurai. Rounding out the Asia Series is a Sumatra Indonesia Barbie.

The European Series depicts costumes from Italy, Russia, Scotland, France, Spain, and Ireland. Each one gives us a taste of their respective countries while retaining that unique Barbie flair.

People the world over love to celebrate. Barbie joins the fun with the Festival Series.  Here she appears in traditional holiday garb from an Irish dancer in classic green to a striking Kwanzaa doll. To see a picture of this beautiful doll, visit www.barbieoftheworld.com.

Two dolls make up the South America Series, Mexico and Amazonia. The Mexico Barbie is sometimes described as a Cinco de Mayo doll.

There are 17 dolls in the Princess Series. They represent cultures from all over the world including Holland, China, England, and ancient Greece. Each is dressed in elaborate, rich robes befitting their royal status.

The Legends of Ireland group consists of five dolls. Here we have beautiful Irish lasses with wonderful red tresses and lavish green gowns as well as depictions of Faerie Queens and a legendary bard.

Many of the Dolls of the World sell for around $30, but a few are limited editions with lavish gowns and accessories.  These often sell for much more. Some of the more expensive selections include the Women of Royalty Series and the breathtaking Inuit Legend.

All told, there are currently 55 dolls in Barbie's Dolls of the World Collection. Three were added in 2011, and the number will probably continue to grow in future years.
