what is the difference between a cloth liner shower curtain and vinyl shower curtain? Which one is better?

I am asking about the liner on the inside. I found a cloth liner at target and a vinyl liner. Will the inside cloth liner get soaking wet? Will it protect the outside cloth?

Vinyl shower curtains are made of vinyl and are usually treated with chemicals to try to retard mildew growth. Cloth curtains are made of some sort of cloth, some more water resistant than others. Many people use both with a cheap vinyl liner protecting the cloth curtain. You normally don't need to provided the cloth curtain is thick enough (some are just lacy things, some are made of denser fabric). An advantage of using a cloth curtain is that they are washable, and vinyl curtains and liners are difficult to even clean when cleaning the shower and tub.

I use vinyl because my husband likes long showers, but I have used a cloth one on its own before. I replace my vinyl curtain about once a year. Some people don't like the fumes from vinyl curtains. I think it's largely personal preference.
