How do I start a dc to edge of a knitted pattern?

I am knitting a poncho ,it says dc (crochet )to edge of poncho how do i start it..never dc before but looked it up but don't know how to start the stitch

I think you just start with a slip knot like you start with when knitting your cast on row.
