is the beginning of a zig zag crocheted blanket supposed to look weird?

I have started a crocheted blanket that follows a zig zag pattern (VVVVVV like that), but the beginning looked nothing like that, even looked like it was losing the wave. I was wondering if I was doing it wrong, or is that just normal?

the first few rows will not look like much. Make 8 or 10 rows and you should see it taking shape.
