Is it ok to use a cotton fabric when making a hand-stitched rag doll ?

I'm making a hand-sewn rag doll for my 7 yr old daughter for christmas, and wondered if its ok to use any fabric instead of the muslin it says you should/could use.
Any information on this would be so great.

Cotton material is fine, but won't be as sturdy- muslin is just coarse cotton and is extremely durable.
