It was early in the 1970s that Sam Butcher as well as buddy Bill Biel, began a small businesses to create the Precious Moments artwork on a brand of greeting cards and posters. They called their initial business Jonathan & David. They decided to introduce their new designs at the annual Anaheim Christian Booksellers Association Convention. A large crowd of eager buyers soon surrounded the booth asking to order their products. The group turned so big that nearby sellers offered to help the new guys take orders.

It was soon after that, that Sam was contacted by Enesco, a major manufacturer, to create porcelain figurine derived from his design titled “Love One Another.” It is reported that Sam was so overcome when he observed the initial porcelain trial that he dropped to his knees and cried. That turned out to be the beginning of a sensation for both Sam Butcher and the gift business.

Towards the end of the late seventies, the initial 21 original Precious Moments collectible figurines had been introduced to the buying public. The reaction to the collection was extraordinary. People started sending letters to Sam, sharing with him how the Precious Moments figurines had touched their everyday life in very heartfelt and moving ways. Within less than a year following the initial launch, demand from customers was tremendous. The market acceptance of the Precious Moments figurines was truly amazing. Sam Butcher did not lose contact with his first objective to produce artwork which blended his genuine feelings together with his abiding spiritual faith.

The Precious Moments porcelain figurines make wonderful baby shower gifts, or party favors. The entire line includes, in addition to the adorable figurines, Christmas ornaments, books, picture frames, videos, and music. All of the designs incorporate the teary eyed style of the figurines in some way. It is amazing to realize that their are over one hundred diverse businesses which have been licensed for the Precious Moments style which covers a broad range of products.

Sam Butcher had a lifetime dream to build a small chapel as a private place he could share his spiritual faith. He wanted to spread his belief in God with everyone who desired to stop by. He said he was initially motivated by the view of Michelangelo’s paintings in the Sistine Chapel. He says he recalls studying the masterpiece and imagining, that at some point God may offer me the opportunity of expressing what light He has provided me by painting things I sense He needs to say about His grace?”

It was after he moved to Carthage, Missouri, that Sam’s dream would became a reality . It was on his property there, that he was able to take on the difficult task to build the chapel he had imagined for such a long time. Today the small chapel is really a beautiful sight. All around each and every turn are angels, murals, paintings, stained glass, and many other pieces of artwork.
