Same Sex Marriages

Same sex marriage also called gay marriage is the union of two persons of similar biological sex or social gender. It elicits heated debates from legal, social, civil and religious perspectives more than even the access of abortion to women.  The main cause of conflict is whether the same sex unions should be termed as a marriage. The term marriage in both Greek and Christianity as been used to refer to a mutual union between persons of opposite sex (a male and a female).

The denial of same sex marriage is a form of minority discrimination, all legal systems work on the basis of majority rule. Hence Messerli argues that although that is the case, the minority rights should be protected to avoid discrimination. He considers the denial of marriage to homosexuals same as denial of marriage to black couples or Hispanics. Since it's considered illegal to engage in homosexuality according to James R White and Jeffery D Niell and some world states e.g. Australia. Therefore there's no discrimination since gay rights are not recognized in the first place.

The institution of marriage is sacred, carried between a man and a woman for procreation and companionship. Already the divorce rate has risen tremendously up to 50% in some regions across the world. Acceptance of gay marriage will lead to jokes and ulterior motives e.g. saving of taxes hence continued demeaning of the marriage sanctity. It's also illogical to accept them as they do not fulfill the main cause of marriage, to procreate. This view is rejected by Messerli who argues that, basing marriage on procreation should then make its unlawful to barren heterosexual to stay together.

The opposition of homosexuality is regarded as hate speech in some American states that have legalized gay marriages e.g. Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont and countries like Denmark and Nepal. This has lead to curtailing of free speech and religious rights especially among heterosexuals.  Politics affect the way of worship of people in a given society, according to Frank Turek. The acceptance of homosexuality will hinder religious people engaging in politics as their beliefs will contradict with the laws of the land leading to imprisonment and fines.

David Kupelian in his book ‘Marketing Evil' he views the legalizing of homosexuality as detrimental as acceptance of abortion and other vices. He states that ‘'We've forgotten as a society what love is, because supporting and justifying homosexuality is not real love any more than glorifying drinking helps the alcoholic or celebrating smoking helps wipe out lung cancer . . . The most loving stance for others to take is not to serve as enablers of self-destructive and immoral compulsions, but to stand in patient but firm opposition.''  A stance that has been applauded by James White and other anti-homosexual crusaders who view the legalizing of the vice as a destructive to the society's moral stand and to the homosexual's health.

The number of adoptions will increase to help the many children across the world seeking adoptions as gays cannot have children of their own. Its viewed as a noble venture if accepted as it will help to alleviate the poor living conditions of children seeking adoption. The desire to have families among gay couples will also lead to strengthened family bonds as both parents will be available. If the gays are allowed to adopt, their levels of responsibilities will increase hence a decrease in high risk sexual lifestyles. The formation of a complete family through adoption will also encourage stronger family ties and values; marriage encourages people to settle down with one partner. Isn't that the type of lifestyle we want to encourage? Wonders Joe Messerli. That notion is viewed to be misleading according to Frank Turek. He argues that the legalizing adoption among homosexuals will further degrade the traditional values of family.

It's also viewed as a sure way of weakening the whole marriage legality. It will be acceptable to marry an object or an animal in the near future if gay marriage is condoned, argues Turek. Same sex marriage activists argue that the union does not affect anyone in the society, but this could be the start of many other severe moral degenerative scenarios. Joe Messerli states ‘' If someone wants to marry his dog, why shouldn't he be able to? What if someone wants to marry their brother or parent? What if someone wants to marry their blow-up doll or have 10 wives?'' a clear indication of all the options available if the society allows people to do what they want in terms of marriage. There is need for extremely firm principles that govern the institution of marriage in order to instill respect and progress in terms of its emulation in the future.
