Naughty horse in flat class?

My horse is a doll in over fences classes, but when it comes to flat classes he might as well never had a saddle on, he bucks, and he rears. Terrible, which is really a shame because he is a gorgeous mover. He is fine schooling with sereval horses in the ring!

Any idea's to get him to behave?

Oh and I do lunge him, he just gets all worked up.

Speaking from experience...

Resist the urge to longe him into the ground. Ten minutes is fine. Any more than that you end up jazzing your horse up and increasing his longing stamina. Most of the work needs to come from under saddle. When you are working her before the class, do a lot of transitions up, down, and most importantly WITHIN the gate. This will really work her hind-end... its like muscle building for horses. I know its tough at most shows, but try to stay away from rail riding during warm-up. Throw in some small, size-changing circles, lots of changes in direction, serpentines, shoulders-in, leg yields, etc. Really mix it up and keep her engaged mentally.

When you finally get into the ring, again, try to stay away from rail riding. You have to be clever about this, and if done right, you can actually bring more positive attention to your horse. Utilize circles... just pretend you are too close to someone else in the ring. When you are on the judge's back, leg-yeild or play with the gait a little... pushing her forward and bringing her back. It all needs to be very subtle in case the judge flips her head.

Try regulating your breathing while you are on her back... we all tend to stop breathing or breath very shallowly once we enter the ring. Talk to your horse when the judge isn't looking in very low, rhythmic tones.
