How to Accompany Your Baby to Sleep

Accompanying your baby to sleep is not easy to imagine. Associated with this problem, there are some factors you should consider.

Recognizing several sleepiness signs

Rubbing eyes, crying, and yawning are several signs that your baby starts to be sleepy. Baby that is very tired generally gets difficulty to fast asleep. So, before he gets sleeping disorder, make sure to recognize the signs. Meanwhile, the grown up child leans to be careless, spoiled, and hyperactive.

Understanding that the sleeping time of babies is very long

A baby needs to sleep for 16 hours per day. He just wakes up to eat and change his wet diaper or cloth. The more he grows, the less he sleeps at noon and the longer he sleeps at night. When he is six months old, he should be able to sleep all night and sleep 2-3 times at noon. When he is 1 year old, he sleeps just one time at noon and sleeps for 11 hours at night.

Feeding, taking a rest, and then napping

Falling asleep after being fed is a natural thing for baby. The time when you feed your baby before sleeping is the right time for you to make a good relationship with your baby. However, if you feed him too long, he will learn that feeding is the only way to make him sleep. So, try to take a rest from feeding him by napping for some minutes.

Lengthen his napping time

Is your baby sleepy easily? Is his age more than six months old and his nap only for 20 minutes per stretch of his nap time? So, try to stimulate him to nap longer. First, you can ask him to play at his nap time, so he does not fall asleep indirectly. To make your baby sleep longer, make sure he naps 1-2 hours per nap and slumbers at night.

Make some routines before napping

You can help your baby to slumber by:

- laying him down at noon in the same time every day,
- avoiding him to have a nap that is too late. If he gets difficulty to sleep at night, fasten your nap time or wake him up from his nap quicker.
- And, always use his own bed when he will nap and sleep at night, so he will associate those times as his sleeping time.

Accustom him to fall asleep by himself

After several weeks, begin to accustom your baby to fall asleep by himself in his own bed. So, he does not need to fall asleep in your hug. You can lie him down in his own bed when he looks sleepy. This habit will teach him to fall asleep by himself, so he does not need to be carried on your back, to be cradled, or to be given some food. It also helps him to learn to sleep again when he wakes up at night.

Think about the safety

Move your baby into a safe place when he falls asleep in unsafe place that includes sofa, a bed for mature person, or floor. Always lie him down in recumbent position to avoid him from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Stay away blanket, pillow, doll, safety pillow, and soft things from his bed. And, do not let him sleep near the older child or pet.
