The Benefits of Traditional Educational Toys

It’s not surprising that educational toys are wildly popular with parents, grandparents and caregivers alike.

Toy manufacturers are meeting the ever-rising demand for educational toys by constantly introducing exciting new technology.  As a result, educational toys are morphing into child sized PC’s and hand-held video games that stimulate little minds by means of bells, whistles and flashing lights.

And while they unquestionably have educational value, let’s face it, electronic toys do little to develop social skills or encourage imagination, creativity or physical play.

For that reason, these types of toys should be balanced with those that provide physical and creative play that calls for a high level of interaction - particularly those traditional toys that have stood the test of time, despite their lack of current technology.

Given today’s economic climate, supplying these toys doesn’t have to be expensive,

Simple things like crayons, construction paper, scissors, glue and modeling clay are reasonably priced, and encourage creativity.  Sidewalk chalk is another example of a low-cost supply that will have them producing original art day after day.

Traditional board games can be purchased new or gently used.  Board games are available for every age and skill level.  Playing them with family and friends can help strengthen letter and color recognition in younger children and increase strategy and sequencing skills in older kids.

Things that replicate real life experiences like dolls, dollhouses, toy food, play-kitchens and toy cars will promote imagination and allow children to express themselves.  Give them dress-up clothes and costume jewelry (even grandma’s hand-me-downs) and imaginations will flourish.

Providing children with a healthy mixture of modern and traditional educational toys can be done affordably, and will allow them the opportunity to strengthen skills through the various forms of play that are essential to their healthy development.

I either played basketball, ran, or hid behind bushes and chased after stray cats..

Oh and the game of Life or whatever it's called.. Life yeah.. that.. and I would always feel uncomfortable when my person had a kid because that meant she did the naughty.
