Lalaloopsy Dolls vs Cabbage Patch Kids

If you pay attention to the toy market, you may have noticed the popular new dolls for young girls, the Lalaloopsy dolls.  Many people have observed that these new dolls from MGA Entertainment share some similarities with the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls that were a huge sensation back in the early eighties.  Because of this, the question has to be asked whether this popular new line of dolls will live up to its comparison and become as much of a sensation this holiday season as did the Cabbage Patch Kids.

But we shouldn't minimize the fact that there are some very important differences between these two dolls that may affect the differences in their popularity. These differences make it a little less likely that the Cabbage Patch Kids buying frenzy of the early 80's will be duplicated in the Lalaloopsy dolls.  The target audience for these two lines of dolls makes up the main important difference.  Cabbage Patch Kids dolls were created to appeal to a very diverse range of people through differences in gender, skin color, and many other factors.  They appealed to both young girls and young boys, and even in many instances to adults. 

 

This broad range of appeal was a big part of the driving factor behind the incredible popularity of the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls.  The Lalaloopsy dolls, on the other hand, are specifically targeted at young girls.  The dolls themselves are all girls, and their accessories and background stories are meant specifically to appeal to young girls who enjoy dolls.  This gives them a much more limited range of appeal, which makes it very unlikely that the Lalaloopsy dolls will enjoy the same level of popularity as the Cabbage Patch Kids enjoyed.
