I need ideas on how to make a plain out of date little black dress fit for Homecoming?

I don't want to have to buy a dress bc i was given a dress that fits me perfectly by a friend, the only problem is that it is from the distant past. I need ideas on how to make it look good for homecoming using rather inexpensive materials. It is black, made of strechy material, it comes to just above my knees, and barely fans out at all. Please if you have any ideas on how to improve my dress let me know, I am desperate for anything.

okay well you can jazz it up with metallic accesories(shoes, handbag, jewelry) or even patent would work great. patent shoes would be good but maybe too casual bu you could shop around for evening shoes.

you can even go to a seamstress and ask her to add some details like changing it to a halter or adding more volume to the skirt...it shouldnt be too much money.
