What makes a good college string ensemble?

I'm a violinist currently in highschool and I was wondering what really makes a good college string ensemble? That is, size, proficiency, etc. I can only attend a Massachusetts college, so are there any particularly good ones for music? So far I've seen UMASS Lowell, however, their string ensemble is quite small (5 violins and 6 celli).
I plan on becoming a professional violinist and/or a music teacher.

Do you mean you are required to attend STATE schools in Massachusetts? I am originally from MA, and there are many fine colleges - UMass Lowell is not among them . . . We both got our MM degrees from Boston U many years ago - and there is New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory, Longy, UMass/Boston, and others. Please give us more info. Unless you graduate from a FINE music school, then your hopes just might not come true - life is competitive, and you must be well-educated. Somebody is probably going to mention Berklee - NOT NOT NOT the place for you. First of all, they are not classical-strings oriented, and they do not offer teaching certification for MA schools, either.
