Japan imports large quantities of machinery, fossil fuels, foods, chemicals, textiles and other industrial raw materials. There have been considerable steps taken in recent years to open the country's markets to outside competition, but massive government debt is greatly restricting major new investment. Whether for business purposes, or to help keep in touch with family and friends still living there, there has been a large increase in demand for dependable and speedy international delivery services to Japan.

As its home-grown business has shrunk, Japan's biggest companies have increasingly looked abroad to expand their markets, often with considerable success.
