HEART TO HEART

 

A candle loses nothing when it gives its light to another wick.

Today in Heart to Heart I wanted to continue our discussion about passing kindness on (PKO).  The children gave examples of how each of them were trying to do this at school each day.  To help the children understand that great things happen when people help one another.  I dramatized the following problem:

 

There were two islands.  Both islands had people and food.

The rule of each island was that the people had to eat the food with long spoons.

(I used props to demonstrate this fact.)

The spoons were so long, however, that the people could not feed themselves.

The people on one island were starving and becoming weak from hunger,

while the people on the other island were well fed and content.

 

The children used the props and clues to solve the people's dilemma.  Our students loved the challenge of this mystery!  I am proud to say that after a wonderful discussion Kyle Hasak solved the moral puzzle.  He demonstrated to his peers how the content people on the island took turns and fed each other with the oversized spoons.   We concluded our session by realizing that kindness and teamwork was very important.  We all suggested ways that we could put this into practice at home and at IDEAL.

Today in Heart to Heart I read a story titled, Trouble with Trolls by Jan Brett.  The story was about a girl and her dog, Tuffi.  In the story, the girl finds herself in problem situations.  Fictitious trolls appear trying to take her dog Tuffi.  The protagonist (girl) must use her brain (think skills) to "outsmart" the trolls and save her dog.  The children were very impressed with the ways the girl used materials that were available to her to find a solution to her problem.  In our discussion, we decided that all problems have solutions.  The following steps were suggested by the children to solve a problem:

 

1. State your problem (to yourself).
2. Remain calm (so your brain can work).
3. List possible choices to solve your problem and decide on the best solution.  (Never have a tantrum, curse or blame, these things do not solve the problem).
4. If you are unable to find a solution state your problem clearly to someone and politely ask for their assistance.
5. Also, use your brain to help others solve their problems.
