Is the Sigma 24-70 2.8 L jsut as good as the Canon 24-70 L 2.8? Goes with XTI for fashion and glamour shoots?

I'm getting the XTI but I know I want to shoot glamour/fashion editorial via web and 8 X 10 prints. Wanted to know what lenses are Photographers using for shots and are the above two good for like escort, fashion model shoots thanks
Also are the any other recommended glasses that are affordable for fashion shoot/glam...I new but I'm not a dummy I learn quick
With the two answer I got, I think I will stick with the Canon Glass, Now for my second part question, I've been looking at the Canon 40D and comparing it to the XTI... Is their any comparable difference between the two...besides the fact that the 40D has Live View and generally speaking is semi-pro comparedto XTI? I will be getting very good lenses for either camera, but should I spend money on getting the cheaper body of the two, or get the 40D if I plan on moving up?

Sorry, but I will disagree with Fhotoace. The science of optics isn't about "secret designs". Quite simply, it's just about designing the lens elements, using the proper materials (like special fluorite elements), and making sure that the lens elements are properly aligned.

The difference is more about individual quality control over how the lenses are made. Canon, Nikon, Pentax, and other proprietary lens makers inspect their lenses more closely and are very careful about what leaves the factory and goes to the store to be sold. Essentially, your odds of getting a good lens are much higher with Canon or Nikon because they've tried to weed out the lousy lenses.

Third-party lens makers like Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina make fine lenses. In fact, some of their designs are unique and unmatched by the big guys. For example, Sigma makes an 18-200mm lens, but Canon doesn't have one. Tamron makes a 24-135mm lens that blows away Nikon's 24-120mm VR lens. Tokina's 12-24mm is a remarkable wide angle lens. The Sigma 10-20mm is used by pros because there's nothing that performs like it. So don't buy the baloney that you have to buy from Canon or Nikon--judge by what you need and how a particular lens performs.

Now, with the shooting you're looking to do, the biggest problem is that while the lens is wide enough at 24mm, at the other end, you don't get much of a portrait telephoto focal length. And therein lies the problem with either lens--it's a good midrange zoom, but not a very good portrait telephoto.

Now, let's answer your first question about whether the Sigma is as good as the Canon. Answer: probably not. The Canon L glass is top of the line while the Sigma 24-70mm is going to have enough quality variation that you might get a good copy or you might get a bad one or you might get an average performer. If you get a good one, you'll be happy with the performance, but odds are more in favor of a mediocre/average performer. The Canon will be a top of the line performer because it just has better quality control and the glass formulations are better (L glass uses more expensive fluorite in the elements).

Generally, I think you'll be happier with a zoom with a little more reach. I think the 24-105mm L IS f/4 from Canon would be a better choice for the kind of shooting you're interested in. I would also look long and hard at the 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS lens.

But in any case, don't get caught up in the hype about having to buy the name-brand lens; you just get the lens that's the right tool for the job. For example, I have found my Tamron 24-135 SP to be better than the equivalent Nikon (the 24-120mm lens), and I use that for much of my studio shooting. For safari and long distances, I use a Sigma 80-400 Optical Stabilized lens. And for general midrange/low light shooting, I have a very good Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. The point is: choose the right lens for the job.
