Egyptian Collectables: The Goddess Isis

Isis is one of the oldest deities in Egypt and also one of the most important. While other gods were worshipped widely, Isis was worshipped almost universally by all Egyptians. As the major goddess of the Egyptian pantheon, she had many of the same qualities of other mother-goddesses found all over the world.

She was worshipped as the great protector, prayed to for guidance and for peace in the world. You can find temples to Isis everywhere in Egypt, some of them quite ancient and many Egyptian homes had shrines devoted to her. The worship of Isis was also taken up by the Greeks and the Romans, and indeed, Isis followers are still found today.

Isis it depicted as a beautiful woman in magnificent clothing, sometimes shown wearing the sun disk. Unlike other Egyptian deities, her appearance has not been altered over the centuries. She is considered to be the patron of women, mothers, children, magic, medicine, and the Ritual of Life. Isis had mass appeal, so she was worshipped widely not only throughout Egypt but also much of the known world.

Isis was the daughter of Nut and Geb and the sister to Osiris, Set, and Nephthys. She was the mother of Horus and wife to Osiris.In earlier times she was not only the wife to Osiris, but his female counterpart, equal in all ways and powers.

In the Legend of Osiris, she travelled the world to find all the pieces of his body and it is she who brings him back to life with the aid of Thoth. But that is not the only time she is associated with Thoth. Together they taught man the secrets of magic, medicine, and agriculture.

Her power is spoken of much in the ancient stories, and some consider her to be more powerful than Ra and Osiris. In one Egyptian legend, it is said that she tricked Ra into revealing his secret name and in doing so, gained his power.

Despite this trickery, she is never depicted as selfish or cruel, except to those who would harm those she loves. With the traits of power and compassion, crafty but merciful, Isis represents all the qualities of women.
