How to Bind Handmade Books

If you have a lot of online texts or reading materials on your computer, odds are that you may want to print and bind them yourself at some point. It is actually not hard to learn how to bind handmade books; all you will need is some basic tools such as glue, a printer, scissors, and a knife.

There are three basic steps to binding books.

The first is to assemble the pages in a neat way so that they line up and stay together evenly. This is important so the binding can be even and straight.

The second step is to create the actual binding and attach it to the pages. This is done by using what is known as board - it can be something as simple as a piece of cardboard or thick paper.

The type of board used for the binding is dependent on what type of book is being created. Paperbacks often use just thick paper for the binding.

The third step is to actually measure the pages and bind them. This is done by placing the pages on a flat surface and holding them down with something, then using a knife and/or scissors to cut them.

Once the pages are ready, they can be easily attached to the binding.

Finally, front and back pages of the book are to be made. The front and back pages are measured to fit the size of the book, then attached using glue. These can be decorated and designed in any way you wish, and pictures can be included wherever desired.

As you can see, learning how to bind handmade books is a simple process that does not cost much at all outside the basic materials required. There are many different types of bindings such as Japanese bindings and medieval bindings, which can be used for a more creative or stylized book.
