MULTIPLY BOTH SIDES BY x ( x-4)

60 ( x- 4) + 24x = 8 * x ( x-4)

60x - 240 + 24x = 8x^2 - 32x

8x^2 - 116x + 240 = 0

2x^2 - 29x + 60 = 0

2x^2 - 24x -5x + 60 = 0
2x ( x - 12) -5 ( x - 12) = 0

( 2x -5) ( x- 12) = 0

x = 5/2 , 12

ANSWER the speed was 12 km per hour ( 60 km) & 8 km per hour ( 24 km )
