Listening devices, a tool to help everyone prevent crime

In Italy, a bill that is being passed in the current months allows common citizens to give their contribution to public order and security, for example by legalizing street patrolling by private institutions. Without going that far, one can prevent street crime on his workplace, thanks to modern surveillance technology, for example by using miniaturized listening devices.

This happened, for example, to a factory in my region. The director noticed that since a while, some strange-looking people were occasionally wandering within the factory compound. This was mostly happening during lunch breaks or on shift changes. He was puzzled, so he started a discreet internal inquiry, and found out that these strange guys were coming to the factory, looking for a couple of workers who would leave their post for a while, go out in the yard and come back after a few minutes, and the visitors would leave. This was happening at least 2 or 3 times a day.

The town is certainly not a metropolis, so a few questions in the neighborhood allowed him to ascertain that these guys were small-time pushers who were running their dirty business in town. At this point, he was understandably very concerned, and to make sure that his fears were true, without raising any suspicions and avoiding any possible repercussion, he decided to act on his own without informing the police at that stage.

After a brief Internet search, through some specialized online spy shops which are trading in spy equipment and audio/video surveillance devices, he decided to plant a few listening devices, miniaturized microphones and video bugs inside the factory and in the yard. It was an array of small devices, concealed within electricity boxes, vents, or even inside small objects such as a table calculator or a desk lamp.

These environmental micro transmitters are equipped with extra sensitive microphones and miniaturized radio transmitting devices, capable of picking up conversations and sounds with extreme clarity of sound, transmitting them via radio at a distance ranging up to a few hundred meters, towards a radio receiving station which is generally connected to a digital recorder, in order to store the transmissions on a digital support.

A listening device of the latest generation can also be equipped with a voice activation system, which would only start transmitting when the sensor detects sounds or voices, thus saving in battery life, and optimizing the performance of the entire surveillance operation. Such bugs can be powered by lithium-ion batteries or connected directly to the mains.

There are also other listening devices, the so-called GSM bugs, which are equipped with a SIM card just like the one you have on your mobile phone, which can be used to transmit the eavesdropped conversations at any distance, simply by automatically placing a phone call towards a preset number. The call receiver can be anywhere, and no matter how far he will still be in touch with the person, or place, that he has under surveillance.

In our specific case, the director only had to wait a few days after having installed his bugs, and he discovered that in fact, the premises of his factory were being used by a couple of workers to run a drug trafficking business, and the two guys were selling drugs to local pushers. The conversations eavesdropped were recorded on CDs, of which he made several copies that were sent to a few police precincts in the region, thus making sure that at least one of them would act, and also keeping his privacy to avoid any possible reprisals.

In such situations, it is advisable that an individual takes action, of course within the boundaries of law, in the interest not only of his company, but also of public security and order. Naturally, he should not take the place that our legislation assigns to law enforcement (also to avoid exposing himself to dangers), but he will just provide a valuable help and support to the institutions, helping investigations.

A Miniature Palm Tree?

i'm looking for a christmas present for my friend, and we recently went on a trip to Florida together and she was pretty excited about the palm trees. i wanted to get her a mini one to remember the trip by.
Here's the thing: It has to be small enough to fit on a desk or table (she has a pretty small apartment) and it has to be easy to care for. Also, i live in ontario, so i need to be able to buy one somewhere in town (ie its a pretty common plant).
I know that this is a lot of conditions, but any suggestions of whether such a plant exists would be wonderful!!
PS, i've heard of a Ponytail Palm, which sound pretty good. Can i get those in Ontario this time of year?
