I know it's a personal choice, but what would you do?

You have the option to buy a colt series 70 1911 that is in great shape. Not NIB, but it's really clean. Has a small scratch where someone was not careful in removing the slide pin, but other than that it looks great. Has the original box, but no paperwork, original diamond checking wood grips. I believe I could get it for $1000.
or...
A couple of less expensive guns like a glock, or springfield XD, ect....good guns in their on right, just don't have the collector price tag that a colt series 70 usually generates.

As you said it is a personal choice but since you asked... With out thought or hesitation I would get the 1911.

-For the range: I would go with the 1911, unmatched history stems from that model and maker. Reliability from that gun will be hard to match as well as accuracy.

-For carry: I would go with either the Springfield or the 1911. Reason- The XDM holds many wonderful .45 cal rounds and is one hell of a gun. The 1911 only holds 8rds in a standard mag but will be quite accurate and easy. The XDM however will be "plastic" meaning 2 things. 1-It will not be too hot or cold as the metal gun would be. 2-It is lighter meaning more recoil but easier to carry.

-For collection and resale value: Nothing holds its value better then a colt. Can't go wrong there.

Conclusion: While Glock is an ok brand in my eyes I would stay away from it when other greater brands are in your price range. The XD or XDM are great gun made by a great company. They shoot well and if I was to go buy a polymer gun right now it would be an XD or a FNP 45. The 1911 is always great, I own 4 at the moment and love em.
