When you get bored of your old shade put it on the market and then purchase a new one with the money that you made. I need a recipe to make my own effusion lamp oil.?

I want to make my own effusion lamp oil. The upscale varieties available in stores is too expensive. I have searched through Yahoo and Google and cannot find what I need. HELP! Thank you.

Wow, you're right. It's damned difficult finding a 'how to' on effusion oil. I googled some, and found out that an effusion lamp can also be called a catalytic burner, and once I searched for that, well, the pickings weren't much bigger, but I did find something you might find useful.

Here's two things I found.

A site I can't find anymore but copied text from says:
Find a site that sells fig fragrance oil, try wellington fragrance oil. use 2 teaspoons of oil per 16oz 91% alcohol, mix the oil in a little acetone then pour into the alcohol bottle.

Thrifty fun has another one:
16 FL OZ. ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL 91% VOL. (473 ml) (Do not use "ethyl" or any other type of alcohol.)

.3 OZ. OF FRAGRANCE OIL (8.86 ml)
Add more oil if you want a stronger scent. Try adjusting by increasing fragrance oil at
.1 oz. increments.

I buy the alcohol at Wal-Mart. The fragrance oil (.3 oz) equals 1 3/4 teaspoons. So far I have tried different brands of fragrance oils without any problems. I did discover that some oils are more potent than others and I had to dilute it with more alcohol. I add the oil right to the alcohol bottle and then label the bottle with the name of the fragrance. My friend bought her oil on E-bay and got a very good deal. She only uses one scent. Not like me, I have about ten different scents that I use. So far, I really like my fragrance lamp. I only have it but a few months. I'm wondering how long the stone will last. I guess time will tell.

Basically, apparently, it's '91% alcohol' + 'fragrance oil' = 'effusion oil'. There was some confusion as to whether or not it was alright to use essential oil, but the difference between essential and fragrance oil apparently is that essential oil is retrieved from plants (by steaming or boiling for instance) and fragrance oils are made synthetically.

I'm not sure why essential oils wouldn't be allowed, really, as that question wasn't answered on the site.

Also, the thrifty post didn't specify which alcohol they used but one of the others said: "I used a little bottle of the Christmas Joy oil, that someone had given me a couple of years ago, with 16 ozs. 91% alcohol from Walmart. It really smells nice. My price was about $1.00."

Well.. it ain't much.. but maybe it's enough? Good luck, and here's to hoping it works
