Outfitting Your Guest Room

Spare rooms are an excellent idea for people who have a bit of extra space in their homes. Every now and again people will come to town: this is a great pleasure as it's always nice to have family and old friends around. That said, it can be a bit of a stress as you will have to put them up, feed them and generally entertain them – having a nice guest room will help this along, and ensure you have a great time whenever people visit.

 

Once you've sorted out your guest room you will need to decorate it appropriately as you want your visitors to be comfortable and happy when staying at your place. The most important thing to start with is the bed – people may be coming off the road and desperately need a good night sleep so invest in a nice mattress as well as comfortable sheets and pillows. Some people take this a bit too far and stuff their guest room full of an untold number of pillows, overly frilly comforters and all manner of unnecessary stuff – there's no need to do this, just make the bed simple and comfortable and everyone will be happy.

 

You will also need to do your best to give your guests privacy. Ideally, this would involve setting up an en-suite bathroom which they can use at their convenience. But of course, this is quite a pricey option so you may not be able to do so – the alternative is to set up the room in an area of the house that is a bit sequestered and away from the hubbub of daily life. Above all, be sure to instruct your kids to respect your guests – no one likes getting woken up by screeching children.

 

Finally, you should equip the room with some basic furnishing where they can sit. They may want to spend some time alone in their rooms reading and relaxing. To help them do this, pick up a nice leather armchair or two in which they can sit. It's great to see your friends, but everyone needs some time alone chilling out.

 

Having guests over is a lot of fun, and you should certainly encourage those important to you to come over and stay. But be sure to do this well and have a set up that is comfortable and convenient for your visitors – this will help you both have a great time, and enjoy a stress free visit. A nice bed and a few comfortable leather armchairs can really go a long way.
