How to remove pattern lines from crewel?

I'm new at using crewel kits, and just successfully completed stitching onto a complex pattern. My problem is that the very fine guide lines of the pattern itself still show through the stitching at many places (bright yellow lines on brown fabric). I asked at a fabric shop and they said those lines sometimes come out with washing, but I used wool yarn which shouldn't be washed. Someone else said those lines are sewn into the fabric and can be removed with miniature scissors, but the lines are so tiny it would take weeks to remove them all. Any ideas? Thanks.
