Info on the Albino Leopard Gecko

Have you seen the albino leopard geckos? They are certainly one of the most uniquely colored examples of the designer lizards and they have certainly earned their place as one of the most sought after morphs. If you want to learn more about them, here are some of the basics on these pale and unique looking lizards.

 

Breeds of the Morph

 

There are three popular breeds for the pale lizards. These are the Tremper, the Rainwater or Las Vegas, and the Bell. The Tremper is by far the most popular of the three, being one of the first to come into the scene. They are named after one of the most successful lizard breeders out there today: Ron Tremper. They sometimes have the reputation of being darker than the rest but many breeders stand by this breed. They have been known to appear in the darker mocha or light brown but are also known to appear in paler shades all the way to white and pink.

 

The Las Vegas breed is said to be lighter and the Bells have the unique characteristic of having the reddest coloration in their eyes. Most lizards have red eyes when they are young but the Bells tend to keep them even in adulthood.

 

Natural Light Sensitivity

 

One thing you have to know about these lizards is that they are naturally sensitive to light. They are known to shut their eyes and shy away from bright lights, even during feeding times. Don't worry, the lizards are nocturnal creatures in the wild and are well adjusted to hunt in lower lighting. Just feed them with the lights turned down or during the night.

 

About Genes: Recessive Albinism

 

The trait for the pale coloration of these unique lizards is said to be recessive. This means that it doesn't always show up even if the animal is known to have the trait. You see recessive traits do not show up if they are paired up with a dominant trait. To understand this better, let's discuss how traits are passed on from parent to offspring.

 

When these lizards reproduce, the genetic make-up (the genetic information that makes the lizards what they are) of the parents, stored in their chromosomes splits up. The halves of the chromosomes from the father will join the halves from the mother. This means that every offspring will inherit one half of the traits from the father and half from the mother. This is true even in humans… this is why you can have some physical traits from your mother and some from your father. These visible traits that are inherited are called the phenotype of the offspring.

 

Not all traits will show up, however. Some traits are known as dominant traits and others are recessive. When a recessive trait is inherited from a parent and is paired up with a dominant trait from the other parent, only the dominant trait will show up in the phenotype. This is called a het or heterozygous because it possesses two different traits.

 

This can make breeding albino leopard geckos a bit trickier than other morphs.

 

Other Morphs

 

There are more variants for this unique looking lizard. Some appear in the patternless morph. Some pale lizards are giants… meaning they can grow up to 11 inches or more in length and around 110 pounds or more in weight. Some even have the carrot tails or orange tails that many have come to love.

I want a pair of pink leopard/cheetah print converse, preferably hi tops but I cant find any.
