Critiquing Erica S. Perl: Her Defense Of The Newberry Medal

Perhaps Captain Underpants doesn’t need a Newberry Medal after all. In its stead, Erica S. Perl offers the opinion that books that take creative risks deserve recognition by the ALA for the prestigious Newberry Medal.

Ms. Perl writes that the "Newberry… chooses unconventional books… [which] gives them a fighting chance." Because of the unconventional methods taken by the author, the chance of a parent, much less their children, picking up the book and finding interest in it is slim; the Newberry Medal offers the "quirky" books a chance to spend time in the limelight. And by spending time in the limelight, money is made.

This article seems to be more of a financial argument than a literary argument – albeit it may not be obvious at first glance. There are hints that unconventional books rely on financial progress made by receiving the Newberry, but it is immediately covered up by a mantra of "following your inner muse," to distract the reader from thinking about the real reason why the award was created in the first place.  With the reception of the award, the sales of the book exponentially increase from the exposure and become stocked in libraries all around the country as well as in homes and schools. Okay, so what about Captain Underpants or Goosebumps? Apparently they are not artistic enough for the ALA (although the pick your own storyline in Goosebumps was genius) and more importantly, they are doing well without a nomination for the Newberry Medal. If Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! were to have been omitted from receiving the award, it would most likely be in the bargain bin with Barbie: Rapunzel and the Case of the Beard and Casper The Friendly Ghost in Ghostland.
So is the Newberry Award really based on artistic ingenuity or is it used as a means of profiting from the unobserving masses? Isn’t it obvious? Both.
