Three Ingenious Ways To Decorate You Cushion Covers

Want to spruce up your home? Feel it lacks that luster? Or does it just look out of date or plain boring? But with the recession, you have little to spend on home décor. So why not instead re-use your old cushions covers and give them a new look by adding fabrics trims, appliqué and ribbons. Read on for a few ideas to get you inspired.

Add A Gorgeous Fabric Slip:

A fabric slip can reinvent your old plain cushions, turning them into beautiful and fashionable home décor. To create a slip for your cushion covers, choose a fabric that goes well with you décor scheme. Flowery, glitzy and shimmery fabrics jazz up your boring cushion covers and can be easily changed when you redecorate your house, as you don't need to buy new cushion covers, rather you can make as lip again. Slips look best when vertical on the cushion covers, giving the impression of a fabric sewed on in the centre of the cushion. Add luxurious velvet or laces trims onto the longest sides and your cushion cover slip will make your cushion cover look like it's from a professional designer! (Note: Don't forget to measure out of the size of the cushion length/width wise and leave a 1.5 cm at least for seam allowances).

Add Ribbons/Trims:

A simple way to decorate your cushion cover is by using ribbons or fabric trims. Gather together a selection or ribbons and fabric trims that go well together to give your desired look. A good look to go for is a striped effect using patterned and coloured ribbons/ fabric trims alternately. You can use up to around 5 different ribbons/fabric trims, which can be different patterns, colours or widths to get a fashionable and aesthetically pleasing look. With this design, you'll need to either make the cushion yourself; putting the ribbons on the front when the cushion cover is still not yet together, or undo the seams of a current cushion cover.

Add Buttons:

This ingenious idea lets you recycle all those buttons you have saved over all those years or that have been ‘lost' in your jewellery box. Buttons can be highly versatile as you can embellish them using your own design or sew buttons into a simple pattern at equal distances. Circular appliqués designs work well using a variety of button sizes and sequins. Whilst pearl or gemstone buttons look nice sewed into lines at equal distances. Remember to opt for buttons that don't stick out, you want them to be comfortable after all! (Note: This method requires that you hand sew the buttons on with a fine needle).
