Macaw Feather Types Colors and Species
Macaw feather, Collecting Natural Raw Color.
This article was created to introduce people to the wonderful world of Macaw feather colors types and species. There are so many different kinds of feathers and colors across the different macaw species that the combination's are almost endless. Incredibly, most people have never even seen a real macaw feather up close before.
Each and Every Macaw Feather is unique and different in it's own right. Even if they are Re-Grown by the same bird! The color of different feathers from different locations on the bird it's self can and do vary quite considerably from one individual bird to the next. For this reason collectors are always able to have a one-of-a-kind collection that is never at any risk of being copied or duplicated by anyone. They are always TOTALLY UNIQUE
I have even seen certain tail feathers that are indeed a sight to behold. For example, A Camelot macaw tail feather that was completely yellow all down one side of it and completely blue all down the other side and was 26 "long! Such a feather can easily be worth up to $500.00....It was Just Magnificent!
These types of feathers usually come from what is known as a Hybrid Macaw, and consists of several sub species such as:The Catalina, Harlequin, Camelot, Capri, Flame,Shamrock, Caloshua and the Miligold just to mention a few.
The table below indicates some of the parent species combinations and their offspring that they produce
PARENT 1 + PARENT 2 = HYBRID CHICKS:
Blue & Gold + Green wing = Harlequin
Blue & Gold +Hyacinth = Caloshua
Blue & Gold + Scarlet = Catalina
Blue & Gold + Buffons = Bluffons
Blue & Gold + Military = Miligold
Blue & Gold + Red-fronted= Maui Sunset
Buffons + Green wing = Buffwing
Camelot + Scarlet = Capri
Catalina + Scarlet = Camelot
The most popular and common of these hybrid macaws are the Catalina and Harlequin macaws that you can usually see them in some of the better bird stores throughout the U.S.A.
Macaw Feathers are highly sought after and used in Native American Tribal Art, as well as high end interior design and decoration and also in the fashion industry. This is also a rare and different type of collection to have or get into with many different resources available to you so you can grow your collection such as: Private owners, Breeders, or some pet stores. Also, Let's not forget E-BAY. There are numerous listings for the feather enthusiast there where you can easily browse by category and using the pictures available select the feathers that are just right for you and your own collections.
Just think how impressed your friends and family will be when you show them your valuable macaw feather collection! Remember, that most people have never even seen any real macaw feathers up close before, and they will be amazed by the natural raw beauty of these tropical jewels of nature. They truly are a very valuable and a fun thing to own and something you can keep and treasure for a life time of enjoyment.
As you have probably realized by now, each feather comes from a specific location on the birds body, and is designed for a different purpose and function. Some are for warmth and protection from the elements whilst others are used for control during flight. The feathers on the ends of the birds wings are called "primary feathers" and are for cutting through the air and to provide the initial lift for the macaw during take off. The smaller curved feathers that will generally have a fluffy underside close to the Quill end are called "contour feathers" and serve to protect the bird's skin from heat, cold and rain as well as the bumps, cuts and scratches they have to contend with each day in their own particular environments.
Tail Feathers are usually very long in the center, then get symmetrically shorter down both sides of the two center tails. These long tail feathers are used for stabilization during flight and also as an "air brake" during landing. There are between 12 and 14 tail feathers on most parrots.

Does anyone have a "female True" Scarlet Macaw to sell?
I am looking for a female to possibly breed or have as a pet, depending on how the new female would take to my "Oliver".
It is my hope to try to help in preserving these magnificent Birds. I also have a male African Grey Congo, Unbrella Cockatoo, [all males, that need a female.]
I am new at this on yahoo, so please bare with me.
Thanks,
Lucy
Trying to set up large parrots for breeding should not be taken lightly. It`s not like a dog or cat where nature just takes it`s course. They may fight(even kill each other),never breed;never sit on their eggs, kill the babies, etc.Keep in mind that your present bird may bond (to the new mate)to the point that it would no longer be a pet. Are you prepared to incubate eggs and handfeed them from the day they hatch? I suggest you try breeding `tiels and handfeeding a baby from hatch `til weaning before you even think about getting a mate for your bird. There is a lot of expertise involved in the propagation of large parrots-do some research.Just because you put a male and hen together means nothing, they need the right conditions, diet, nestbox, weather (and a ton of other conditions)-even then they may never produce.Domestic handfed baby parrots are expensive for this reason, they are worth it-lots of hard work and dedication.
