What chemicals are needed to make pennies gold/silver-colored?

I was in my science class and I saw there were gold- and silver-colored pennies. What chemicals are used to make them this color? Can I do it at home?

Dissolve a gold or silver compound in water and run an electric current from the penny through the solution. The gold or silver ions will stick to the penny if the electric current and voltage is right. I think you only need 1 to 2 volts, stick the positive electrode on the penny and the negative electrode in the solution with the penny dipped in the solution, but don't let the negative electrode come into direct contact with the penny.

Try silver nitrate(AgNO3) or gold nitrate(AuNO3) as the solute.

If you want to do it at home, you might try to dip a penny in a salt water solution and dip a gold or silver substance in the solution without touching the penny, and run an electrical current from one object to the other using proper voltage. A AA or AAA battery might work just fine.
