New Years Eve Celebrations

Most cities around the world have fireworks in the main square and most traditions around the world will involve a large family (and sometimes friends) meal. Of course there are those who like to do strange things on New Years Eve like travel to Iceland and watch the nights sky or travel to the far corners of the world to mark the occasion.

Where as many countries celebrate with fireworks, parades, costumes, throwing broken dishes at your door (Denmark), eating 12 grapes (Spain), dropping cream on the floor (Switzerland), baking bread (Armenia), checking to see if the animals have talked (Romania), hanging wooden or straw dolls out side the house (Bolivia) whatever the place everyone has their own ways of celebrating.

In Germany there is an old television program shown over New Years Eve every couple of hours called "Dinner for one!" which is an old program that depicts a wealthy aging woman with impaired vision and her butler who keeps up the charade that there are many guests although there is only one.

In the UK it is popular travel to a rural spot in the heart of English or Welsh countryside and spend the New Years break in tranquil surroundings with a bottle of wine with loved ones. Although some places such as China hardly celebrate the Gregorian New Year and last years the Irish celebrated with a reticent ringing of town bells.

But everywhere you go or whatever you do there's always 'the countdown' which involves counting down the last ten seconds of the year and then a big cheer and hugging and kissing strangers for the next couple of hours.
