New to School Uniforms? 4 Things to Know

Private and religious schools have long had policies that require students to wear uniforms, and many times, these schools have provided the clothing students are asked to wear, usually at some cost to the parents. Over the past decade, however, public schools also have taken a closer look at what uniforms can do for their students. Gang violence, bullying and socioeconomic differences are becoming more of an issue and a distraction for students, and more public schools could be turning to a uniform dress code as a solution. There is a multitude of affordable apparel that meets student dress standards at online retailers like Justice and Old Navy. Here are four things you should know about school uniforms before you shop:

1. Cost and Benefits

Teachers and other school officials generally believe the benefits of instituting a school uniform policy far outweigh the effects on freedom of expression. Schools that have had a uniform policy for several years report dealing with less violence, vandalism and theft and also cite an increased sense of community among students, as well as a renewed focus on learning instead of fashion. Parents and students, however, remain divided about whether having this type of clothing stunts creativity and individualism. This is why many schools also have uniform-free days when students can wear what they want within reason. Parents also worry about the cost of buying specific clothing, as well as the restrictions a dress code puts on religious garments, like Muslim head scarves and Jewish yarmulkes.

2. Best Foot Forward

For school uniforms, the goal is to look professional. Commonly accepted apparel includes khaki pants and dress slacks, polo and button-down shirts, and blazers, sweaters and vests. Colors tend to be darker or neutral, like black, blue, gray and brown, although some schools have a less-formal policy that allow for a whole range of colors. In hotter climates, students also can choose to wear shorts or skirts that fall just above the knee, in addition to jumpers and leggings for girls.

3. Your Budget

Although many schools have programs that help low-income parents buy the required clothing, other parents are left to fend for themselves when it's time for back-to-school shopping. Shop around to find the best prices, and be sure to browse the aisles of your local discount or thrift shop. Look for neutral colors, modest hem lines and classic styles. You're likely to find children's apparel that meets most dress codes and your budget.

4. What to Avoid

Obviously, any article of clothing that is too revealing--a low neckline or short hemline, for example--is a definite violation of most school policies. Also, avoid popular baggy and sagging pants, clothing with a lot of pockets or metal accessories, and excessive jewelry. Athletic and dress casual shoes are acceptable, however, leave the flip-flops, sandals and high heels at home. Other generally unacceptable apparel includes hats and bandannas, scarves, stretch and spandex pants, tank tops, bare midriffs, denim (including jeans) and visible labels.
