A question about pre 1998 vw beetles?

Is it practical for a person to buy a pre 1998 vw beetle, one that is obviously in working condition. I have a 2002 malibu right now but I really hate it and I always wanted a vintage beetle. If it its not practical though then I wouldnt waste my time. Please, as much info as possible, thanks.

Hard to work on?!? Hardly. There's not a simpler engine in the world. If there's a reason that a mechanic won't work on one, it's because they don't understand them, or the technology's before their time. Try finding someone to fix your old '60's console TV.
With a good manual, it's a snap to keep a Classic Beetle in top running order. Parts are still not only abundant, but fairly inexpensive.
The big downsides are that yes, the cars are quite antiquated by today's standards, (no a/c, no power windows...) and they require almost constant maintenance (tune-up every 5000 miles...). Owning a Classic Beetle is and always has been a labor of love.
