How do I remove white gunk growing on vintage plastic buttons?

I just bought more vintage and antique buttons at an estate sale. I always clean them, but occasionally I find one, like now, that has some kind of white gunk growing on the edges of plastic buttons. I don't have any idea how to get it off without ruining them. Can anyone help?

perhaps make a paste of bicarb and water, it cleans really well
